Craniosacral Therapy for Babies

Craniosacral therapy and cranial osteopathy are popular treatments for babies and children because of their gentle approach, and calming yet powerful effects. Newborn babies and children can be exposed to different types of stress and restrictions, and the cranial technique can help ease their bodies and release stresses.

The cranial technique used in craniosacral therapy addresses the body’s cranial rhythm. Almost like checking your heart rate by taking your pulse, practitioners are trained to sense this subtle rhythm in bodily tissues, and diagnose a patient based on any changes or disturbances in the rhythm that they notice. What disrupts the rhythm are tensions or blockages held in the body, whether from emotional or physical stress, strain or disease.

Newborns can hold tension or have bodily restrictions caused by different events, for example from their positioning in the womb, a difficult birth or other events. By releasing restrictions in the head, neck, and nervous system, craniosacral therapy and cranial osteopathy may help sooth pain, release tension, and relieve emotional and physical stress.

How does craniosacral therapy for babies work?

During treatment a practitioner gently places their hands on the baby’s head, neck and other body parts. By ‘listening’ to the cranial rhythm through gentle touch, the practitioner can discover where in the body the tension or restriction is located and can help bring the body back to balance and release the tension or restriction.

A typical treatment for a baby may last between 60-90 minutes and the parent can be present during treatment, holding or feeding the baby if needed. You should see a difference after one treatment but the number of treatments a baby needs may vary depending on the severity of tension and restriction in their body. After the first treatment, the length of treatment and a treatment plan can be discussed with the practitioner.

What are the benefits of craniosacral therapy?

Craniosacral therapy and osteopathy can be useful for newborns who have experienced a difficult birth, as well as a host of other ailments that young babies and children experience. It’s most commonly used for the below list of symptoms:

  • Birth trauma

  • Feeding issues, lip or tongue ties

  • Sensory, teething or sleeping issues
